What DNA Testing Really Tells Us

DNA testing goes far beyond color or appearance. These tests reveal breed-relevant health markers, specific genes that tell us whether a Bulldog is clear, a carrier, or at risk for certain inherited conditions. Each gene has two copies, one from the mother and one from the father.

Clear means the dog does not carry the variant at all.

Carrier (one variant) means the dog has one copy of the gene but does not show symptoms.

At risk (double variant) means both copies of the gene are affected, which can cause a health problem or make it more likely to develop one.

Why Carriers Are Not the Enemy

Here is where many people get it wrong. Breeding only “clear” dogs might sound ideal, but it can actually harm the breed. If every carrier were removed from breeding programs, the gene pool would shrink. That loss of diversity creates bigger issues such as weaker immune systems, structural flaws, and new health risks.
